Hello John! I hope not to offend here, but I would like to offer another point of view, if I may. By the way, (A.D.D. moment here...I've given plenty of grace to Starbucks too, but there's no way I'm leaving them. ;-)
Anyhoo, from my little ol' perspective, I will always give "the Church" every chance, and I'll NEVER un-follow her. However, what the "western institutional" church has become in its corporate nature, and what it offers isn't, in my estimation, what "the Church" is. Systems, corporate structure, and personality-centered gatherings--things I HAVE un-followed-- don't equate to a healthy expression of what THE CHURCH is in my opinion. I understand your analogy within the paradigm from which you offer this perspective, but I personally just do not define the church by an institution or organization, but rather, I see Her as a fluid, naturally flowing, grassroots, every-member-functioning, without walls organism that we ARE--our identity-- not what we GO TO on certain days in certain locations. Maybe that's the hippie coming out in me, so what do I know, right? ;-) I am believing and expecting to see the Body of Christ function in greater power, authority, with more of a sense of community and family. Where Life flows! Miracles happen, and it no longer "surprises" us! Where faith is alive and active, not weird and whacked out! Where the greatest, revolutionary, and creative ideas are birthed from us--His Body! Where members of His body meet everyday, somewhere, in a variety of activities and settings, sharing the fellowship of Christ with each other. His church will, as in Acts, be added to daily, I believe. We will be led by ONE shepherd--Jesus Christ. We will serve one another, and watch the 5-fold ministry flow un-encumbered by structure, power plays or personality-centric existence. And we will infiltrate our whole region with the message and life of Jesus--we will actually experience the Life of Jesus changing the culture through us--His body in the earth. Talk about New Testament expression!!! Wow! That stokes me, dude! I guess in the bible belt, many would play it safe and hang close to the familiar models of the slick church we've come to see on TV and in every pimped out strip mall and school and such, but I guess we're just crazy enough not to conform. The body of Christ has several expressions, and there is room for many expressions of One....Jesus Christ and Him crucified, as long as it remains under His leadership, flowing from His heart, teeming with creativity and life, unfettered by a hierarchical, sometimes politically motivated structure which can become more of a vocation/career opportunity where success is defined by others and image instead of a passionate calling to know Him and make Him known. I encourage you to follow hard after His heart as you join Him in the building of His Kingdom, and bringing His Kingdom to earth! Thank you for listening, and again, no offense is intended in this response.

Sincerely & Humbly,
Milt
